UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO/OMT), a specialized agency of the United Nations, is the leading international organization in the field of tourism. With its headquarters in Madrid, Spain, the UNWTO plays a central and decisive role in promoting the development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, with the aim of contributing to economic development, international understanding, peace, prosperity and universal respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms. In pursuing this aim, the Organization pays particular attention to the interests of developing countries in the field of tourism. The UNWTO's membership is comprised of over 150 countries, seven territories and more than 300 Affiliate Members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities. Steve Noakes has been a member of the UNWTO Business Council and its Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and attended biannual UNWTO General Assemblies in Beijing, China (2004) and Dakar, Senegal (2006).
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) is the forum for business leaders in the Travel & Tourism industry. With Chief Executives of some one hundred of the world's leading Travel & Tourism companies as its Members, WTTC has a unique mandate and overview on all matters related to Travel & Tourism. WTTC works to raise awareness of Travel & Tourism as one of the world's largest industries, employing approximately 231 million people and generating over 10.4 per cent of world GDP.
The World Bank has a number of projects designed to contribute to the MDGs. While all World Bank projects contribute to the achievement of MDG1, the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, individual projects may have a specific emphasis on other MDGs. Various agencies within and associated with the World Bank fund projects with tourism components.
The International Monetary Fund is an international organization of 185 member countries. It was established to promote international monetary cooperation, exchange stability, and orderly exchange arrangements; to foster economic growth and high levels of employment; and to provide temporary financial assistance to countries to help ease balance of payments adjustment.
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development groups 30 member countries sharing a commitment to democratic government and the market economy. It has active relationships with 70 other countries and economies, NGOs and civil society.
The United Nations Development Program work on the MDGs and focuses on coordinating global and local efforts with a wide range of partners to help create coalitions for change to support the goals at global, regional and national levels, to benchmark progress towards them and to help countries to build the institutional capacity, policies and programmes needed to achieve the MDGs.
